    Very good

Position of the Hotel is fantastic, only a minutes walk to the lovely restaurants, bars, shopping etc. Staff at hotel were friendly and helpful. The room we had was at the front and the noise level was very high and that doesn't stop till around 5am, thats when you will manage to drop off. If you wish a hotel to have an early night, then this is not for you, it is positioned in the Heart of the night life, so I would recommend this Hotel for people who wish to enjoy their evening out. Hotel is looking a bit tired, our room was off a good size and clean. I would stay again.

    Superb

We've stayed at the County Hotel on a few occasions, just for weekend breaks, however our last stay was our anniversary and I asked for a room upgrade at my expense. We were given a suite at no extra cost which was very much apprieciated, and also indicated to me that they do remember past guests and reward them when possible.Rooms were clean and comfortable, location superb[a stones throw from the train station]We'll definatley be returning.

Not that it bothered us, but because of it's central city location it may be a bit lively outside on occasion.

convenient for what we used it for visiting relatives

2nd room we were given was far more comfortable

Staff willing to change our room to a lovely, comfortable and newly decorated room. Excellent location- in the centre of town and in sight of the train station.

We were told we would be able to check in early but apparently the receptionist we spoke to didn't arrange this because it may have been busy when we called... Also half of the hotel is cold, slightly dirty looking and above a club. Prices also seem to increase dramatically as more rooms are booked

    Very good

Location was fantastic - it was also quite anonymous, so it was easy to come and go during the day.

A lounge area would have been nice to relax in the evening. - I felt there was nowhere to sit down and relax without looking conspicuous

    Good

    Very friendly staff.

I paid for a continental breakfast as I love my fresh coffee in the morning. Then saw my coffee being made with instant coffee which was available in my room and bwing that I just came for coffee and toast I could have just had the instant coffee and biscuits in my room.I paid £5.50 for it and it was not really up to standard

    Good

Convenient old city centre hotel successfully renovating itself. Management obviously interested in sympathetically preserving the character of the place.

The hotel is in Botchergate which on a Saturday night becomes a very busy pedestrian thoroughfare - can be noisy till late.

The location of the hotel was excellent for sightseeing and shops etc. Also a good base for us as travelling to the Lake District.

The decor/furnishings in our room were very out of date & in desperate need of a makeover. Paper was peeling from walls & part of the wall was black. Hot tap on wash hand basin did not work properly & top of tap missing from cold tap. The bed was clean although the throwover on the bed looked a bit grubby & I found several long black hairs on the sheet/pillow - I have blonde hair!!!

Not much. The central location was fine, and if all you want is somewhere to sleep in comfort, the hotel is adequate.

The following will give a flavour of the state of the hotel: When we arrived at 7.30pm, the chef had gone home as he was bored. This happened each night; nobody eats there in the evening. The bar was unstaffed and we had to turn on the lights. We were the only people using it. The receptionist, who was the only member of staff on duty, served us. The 'restaurant' was the size of a smallish cafe, and food (which was OK) was set out buffet style. The buffet trays were above naked flames, so that the airless room was far too hot to be comfortable. The room had no windows to open. This hotel was plainly a very good one in years gone by, but is currently poorly run. It has the potential to make it an excellent hotel, but needs to be managed by somebody with ambitions and vision. Currently they are just managing gradual decline.

    Very good

    Really helpful staff and practical

It was very tired, worn carpet, mixed light bulbs and the room needed fresh air, it felt a bit damp and mouldy. Sheets were well use wit a couple of holes, we felt we were at a cheap hotel.
